A NSW Chinese Community Scholarship has been established at UNSW to
foster better understanding of cultural diversity, including Aboriginal
issues, as it affects Australian society.
The scholarship follows a gift of $50,000 to the University from the
Australian Chinese Charity Foundation and the Lions Club of Sydney. UNSW
and the UNSW Foundation have matched this contribution to make the
initial scholarship endowment $100,000.
Scholarship applicants must be full-time UNSW students and will be
judged on their academic merit and a demonstrated commitment to helping
the community and contributing to society. An annual scholarship of
$4,000 will be awarded to a student, preferably postgraduate, wishing to
study in any field that will contribute to ethnic affairs issues in
Australia.
An official signing ceremony to launch the scholarship was held on
Monday 7 June at the University. The University's Chancellor, Dr John
Yu, Mr Hudson Chen, Chairperson of the Australian Chinese Charity
Foundation and Mr Peter Sinn, President of the Lions Club of Sydney
Pacific, spoke at the event.
"This is a great example of how the Chinese community is working
together to support the positive things that come from our diverse
Australian society," said Dr John Yu. "It is really encouraging to see
Chinese charities support an academic institution in this way."
Federal Attorney General Mr Philip Ruddock, Ms Rhenzhu Li, from the
Consulate of the People's Republic of China, Mr Henry Tsang and Dr Peter
Wong, both members of the NSW Legislative Council, and UNSW's Deputy
Vice-Chancellor (International), Professor John Ingleson also attended
the ceremony.
The Australian Chinese Charity Foundation and the Lions Club of Sydney
Pacific support charitable organisations throughout the community and
recognise the importance of assisting young people to contribute to
society.
